L3Harris - Summer Mechanical Engineer Intern

(2018-2019)

During my two engineering internships, I gained hands-on experience working on large-scale, real-world projects across both defense and infrastructure sectors. During my first summer as a Mechanical Engineer Intern, I designed components for the Sylmar Ground Return System for the LA Department of Water and Power, ranging from small electrical housing parts to large structural supports for transporting multi-ton cable spools. During my second summer, I worked on contracted projects for the Department of Defense, focusing on underwater acoustic sensor arrays. Across both roles, I developed a strong foundation in practical engineering and professional collaboration. Key experiences included:

  • Problem investigation and resolution across complex, multi-phase defense projects involving drawing errors, manufacturing procedures, and system installation

  • Mechanical design of components at varying scales, from electrical housings to heavy structural supports for ocean-going cable operations

  • Writing and executing test procedures to validate component functionality and ensure design integrity

  • Developing and updating manufacturing processes, including converting legacy systems to 3D models in SolidWorks

  • Real-world engineering insight, including design-for-manufacturing principles, client-facing business meetings, and navigating complex customer requirements and budget constraints
